Registered Acupuncture in Vancouver | What Sets Our Clinic Apart

At West End Wellness, we take a different approach than a walk-in clinic or a spa. Our registered acupuncturists are regulated healthcare professionals with distinct areas of specialty — from chronic pain and sports injuries to fertility, hormonal balance, and mental wellness. Your first visit begins with a full intake: health history, current concerns, and goals. From there, every treatment is built around you.

We offer direct billing to most major insurance providers, so you can focus on getting better rather than dealing with paperwork. ICBC clients are also welcome.

Is Acupuncture Painful? Here's What to Expect

The most common question we hear. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine — far thinner than anything used for injections — and most clients feel little to nothing during insertion. Some notice a brief dull ache or a mild tingling at the needle site, which is normal and usually settles within seconds. Many clients fall asleep at the table.

Our team will always check in with you, adjust needle placement if needed, and move at a pace you're comfortable with. If it's your first time, just tell us, we'll walk you through everything before we start.

Acupuncture Styles and Techniques Offered in Vancouver

Not all acupuncture is the same. At West End Wellness, our practitioners draw from several styles and techniques depending on what your body responds to best:

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture: the foundation of our practice. Fine needles are placed along meridian pathways to restore the flow of qi, reduce inflammation, and support the body's natural healing response.

  • Japanese-Style Acupuncture: uses thinner needles, shallower insertion, and a lighter touch. Excellent for clients who are new to acupuncture, needle-sensitive, or dealing with more complex systemic conditions. Why not learn more about Japanese acupuncture here?

  • Cosmetic / Facial Acupuncture: targets facial motor points to stimulate collagen production, improve skin tone, and reduce fine lines.

  • Cupping and Gua Sha: often paired with acupuncture to release muscle tension, improve circulation, and speed recovery from injury or fatigue.

What Is Acupuncture: The Science and the Tradition

Acupuncture is a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine with over 2,000 years of documented use. In modern healthcare, it's recognized as an evidence-supported treatment for a growing list of conditions by organizations including the World Health Organization.

In simple terms, fine, sterile needles are inserted at specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support the body's healing. Depending on your condition and the technique used, needles may be placed on the arms, legs, back, abdomen, or face and sometimes a combination of points.

The treatment works on both the physical and systemic levels. That's why a client coming in for back pain often reports better sleep and lower anxiety after a few sessions. The body is connected.

The Benefits of Acupuncture: What Our Vancouver Clients Report

Beyond treating specific conditions, clients who attend regular acupuncture often notice broader shifts:

  • Less daily pain and tension

  • Deeper, more consistent sleep

  • Reduced anxiety and a calmer baseline

  • More energy and mental clarity

  • Better digestion and fewer gut flare-ups

  • Improved menstrual regularity and fewer PMS symptoms

  • Faster recovery from workouts and injuries

These aren't side effects, they're the point. Acupuncture works on the whole system, not just the symptom you came in with.

Acupuncture FAQs

  • Acupuncture needles are very thin and flexible, much thinner than needles used for shots. While you might feel a slight tingle or dull ache when the needles are inserted, it's usually not painful. Many patients even find acupuncture quite relaxing! Our goal is to make your experience comfortable. Let us know if you have any concerns at all.

  • At West End Wellness, your safety is our priority. Acupuncture is a well-established practice with a very good safety record, especially when performed by a licensed acupuncturist like ours. While minor side effects like slight bruising can occasionally occur, they are usually temporary and resolve on their own. We will discuss any potential risks with you before your treatment so you feel completely comfortable.

  • The number of acupuncture treatments varies depending on your individual needs and goals. During your consultation, we'll discuss your condition and create a personalized treatment plan together. This plan will likely involve more frequent sessions initially, followed by less frequent maintenance sessions as you progress.

  • Absolutely! We have a team of skilled acupuncturists, and you're welcome to choose the one that best suits your needs. You can book a "Follow Up Visit" with any acupuncturist if you've been to our clinic within the last year. For visits after a year or with a new practitioner, booking an "Initial Visit" allows for a more comprehensive assessment. We want to ensure you receive the best possible care, so let us know if you have any questions about choosing an acupuncturist.

  • Your first visit is all about relaxation! We'll chat about your health goals, then you'll get comfy with calming music and warmth (optional). Thin, sterile needles will be used at specific points. They stay in for 15-40 minutes while you relax or even nap! We'll remove the needles and answer any questions. You can go about your day, but stay hydrated. We'll make sure you feel comfortable throughout. Just ask if you have any questions!

  • Eat beforehand: Have a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment.

Dress comfortably: Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your elbows and knees. Alternatively, feel free to bring shorts and a tank top to change into.

Relax and unwind: The more relaxed you are, the better your experience will be!

We want you to feel comfortable and at ease during your treatment. Let us know if you have any questions!

  • Your acupuncturist will choose specific needle locations based on your unique needs. Most needles are placed on your arms, legs, or torso. In some cases, needles on the face or scalp may be helpful. We will always discuss the planned acupuncture points with you before starting your treatment so you feel comfortable.

  • Acupuncture while Pregnant is a safe way to treat those aches and discomforts during pregnancy.

Please let your acupuncturist know before your appointment; this way, they will be able to accommodate your needs and make your experience as comfortable as possible.
