What is Kiiko Matsumoto Style (KMS) Acupuncture?

Kiiko Matsumoto, a living master, has left an indelible mark on the field with her innovative techniques and profound understanding of the human body.

At the heart of the Kiiko Matsumoto style lies palpation – a powerful tool that sets it apart from other acupuncture approaches. During the treatment, the practitioner palpates the patient’s body with their hands to assess subtle cues and energetic imbalances.

One of the standout features of Kiiko Matsumoto Style Acupuncture is its emphasis on abdominal diagnosis, or "hara diagnosis."

Your abdomen is believed to be a window into the health of your internal organs. By gently palpating the abdomen, the practitioner can detect irregularities and imbalances in the liver, kidneys, stomach, and immune system.

The practitioner can use this technique as a diagnostic tool to treat the patient by palpating the abdomen.

For example, if one of the points on the abdomen feels tender or painful to the patient on palpation, this is called a reflex. The practitioner will relieve this reflex by needling a couple of distal points, then re-checking the reflex on the abdomen to see if the point remains tender.

This type of treatment gives instant feedback to both the practitioner and patient and directs the practitioner on how to treat the patient effectively, targeting the root cause.

What's remarkable about this style is its holistic approach to healing. Kiiko Matsumoto-style acupuncture treats not just the symptoms but also the root causes of health concerns.

The treatments aim to restore harmony to the entire being by addressing the underlying imbalances that contribute to your condition. It's like nurturing a plant from its roots, ensuring long-lasting and sustainable wellness.

The magic of the Kiiko Matsumoto style lies in its adaptability to your unique needs. It incorporates local and distal points, meaning the practitioner may target areas near the discomfort and distant points that connect to the affected meridians.

This comprehensive approach helps stimulate your body's self-healing mechanisms and encourages a harmonious flow of energy throughout your system.

KMS acupuncture combines both the classic Chinese principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern pathophysiology.

Kiiko’s style of acupuncture is also suitable for all patients, especially for those afraid of needles, as the needling methods are shallow and gentle, using the tiniest gauge needles.

This is a major differentiator from other forms of acupuncture, which patients love and are drawn to.  Kiiko also incorporates a lot of O’kyu moxa, magnets and diodes to her treatments, which are non-invasive techniques to further enhance a patient’s acupuncture experience and results.

After surgery, poorly healed scar tissue can be a major barrier to successful recovery, causing not just problems at the site of the scar but also at secondary locations or organs by interfering with meridian flow.

Kiiko Matsumoto has pioneered the treatment of scar tissue to unblock Qi and heal problems that have not responded to other treatments.

FAQ on Kiiko Matsumoto Style Acupuncture

What are the key principles of Kiiko acupuncture?

At our clinic, we use the Kiiko style to find the "root" of your health concerns. It’s based on three main ideas:

    • The Body as a Map: We use your abdomen (the Hara) as a diagnostic tool to see how your internal organs are functioning.

    • Immediate Results: We look for instant feedback. If a point is tender, we find a "releasing" point that immediately makes that tenderness disappear.

    • Modern Meets Ancient: It blends 2,000-year-old Chinese medical wisdom with modern knowledge of anatomy and the nervous system.

What training is needed for Kiiko acupuncture?

Practitioners of the Kiiko style are first fully Licensed Acupuncturists (L.Ac) who have completed their foundational medical degrees. Because this style is highly specialized, many choose to pursue intensive post-graduate study to master its unique techniques.

At our clinic, we are committed to this lineage of learning. Our training includes a deep foundation in the 150-hour intensive study program through Turning Point Seminars. To stay at the forefront of the field, we also regularly attend live seminars and hands-on workshops taught by Kiiko Matsumoto herself. These masterclasses allow us to learn her latest clinical discoveries and refined diagnostic methods directly from the source, ensuring you receive the most up-to-date and effective care possible.

    Is Japanese acupuncture effective?

Absolutely. It is highly effective for chronic pain, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. Because the needles are ultra-thin and the touch is gentle, it is especially powerful for calming the nervous system. Many patients find it more effective for stress-related conditions because the body doesn't "fight" the treatment; it relaxes into it.

    How does Kiiko acupuncture differ?

If you’ve had "Traditional Chinese Medicine" (TCM) acupuncture before, you’ll notice a few big differences:

    • The Feel: We use much thinner needles and shallower insertion. You will rarely feel a "heavy" or "aching" sensation.

    • The Interaction: Instead of just checking your pulse and tongue, we will spend more time gently pressing on your abdomen and neck to find specific reflex points.

    • The Customization: Each treatment is highly interactive. We don’t just "needle and leave"; we are constantly checking your body's physical response to ensure the points we chose are the right ones for you that day.

    Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Kiiko Matsumoto Style Acupuncture offers many benefits for those seeking a personalized and holistic approach to their health.

This style focuses on individualized treatment, palpation, abdominal diagnosis, and the effective use of acupuncture points, which can bring about transformative changes on your healing journey.

It's essential to note that this list is not exhaustive. KMS acupuncture can also address numerous other conditions, and each individual's journey is unique.
